Effective Signage Design

Signage in design refers to any kind of visual graphics created for the use of communicating a certain message or displaying some type of information for an audience. It can include a symbol, emblem, words/typography, arrow, map, or any graphical reference. I consider signage to be one of the many design disciplines that Environmental Graphic Design embraces. Environmental Graphic Design is the umbrella term of experiential design that helps people connect to places, including architectural, interior, landscape, industrial, wayfinding, identity communication/information, and more.

Above is a door sign I created for our design studio in Los Angeles, California. As a video game creative agency and marketing agency, I wanted to portray the many different creative services we provide in a simple yet effective way.

In order to make a sign effective, it must be designed with the following elements in mind:

Simplicity

Empty space

Clear and readable typefaces

Contrast of colors (saturated colors over saturated colors is really hard to for the human eye to decipher)

Overall, the main purpose of signage design is to either provide information, directions, identification, or instructions in a way that the viewer will take cognitive decisions based on what they see.

Below are just a couple of other signs I designed for one of our parties and clients.
